SUMMARY:Third Annual Neighborhood Community Dinner
DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to join The Salvation Army and Salem Alliance Church for the Third Annual Neighborhood Community Dinner on Friday\, February 19th at 6:00pm to 7:00pm. The dinner is being held at Salem Alliance's Cedar Hall at 555 Gaines Street NE.\, Salem. \n\n\n\nThis is the third year the two partners will host the Neighborhood Dinner and every year they see a diverse group of individuals and families sit down at the table. One of the most vivid stories Melissa Baurer\, Salvation Army Director of Social Services\, remembers from last year is the story of a family who nearly missed the event\, "They rushed in at the last minute just as plates were being cleared from the tables. There was a dad and two boys. After we assured the dad that we still had plenty of food he exhaled in relief and sank into a chair. He said he didn't know how he was going to feed his kids that evening until a neighbor told him about the event on his way home from work. He and his kids ate several plates of food and laughed with the three volunteers who sat with them. You could see the stress melt off the dad's face as he saw his kids eating. We even sent them home with leftovers!" This father was part of a growing population of working families who make more than the US poverty level\, but less than the basic cost of living for the state\, known as ALICE households. \n\n\n\n"The special thing about this event\," says Baurer\, "is the fact that it brings together people from across the socio-economic spectrum. There is nothing separating the homeless from the working poor from the middle class or even some who are wealthy. Volunteers and guests all eat together and enjoy each other's company while recognizing each other's humanity." \n\n\n\nThere are no special requirements or reservations needed to attend. All are welcome! The Salvation Army and Salem Alliance expect to serve 150-200 people a baked chicken dinner and dessert during the free community event.
